Local Brothers and Nordic Ski Coaches to Compete in Upcoming US Biathlon National Championships in March

Crystal Community Ski Club (CCSC) is proud to have two of their own coaches, Ian and Ryan Durand, competing in the US Biathlon National Championships, taking place on March 23rd in Casper, Wyoming. 

Over the past five years, the Durand brothers have brought a unique combination of elite-level skiing, passion for the sport, and empathy for their students to the fledgling CCSC Nordic Team.

CCSC’S NORDIC GOLDEN TICKET

"Together, they form what I call our 'Golden Ticket'," says one of the program founders, Beth Major. "What they bring to the Nordic Team is a brand of magic and fun that has kids falling in love with the sport." 

Ryan Durand, a 20-year-old athlete and photographer, will be competing in the US Biathlon National Championships in the IBU Junior category. Durand will be participating in two races over two days and aims to earn a spot on Team USA. “My ultimate goal is to represent Team USA at the Olympics,” says Durand.

Ian Durand, a 24-year-old Paramedic and Firefighter in Benzie and Long Lake Counties, will be representing the state at the US Biathlon National Championships in the 22+ category in the sprint, pursuit, and relay races. While he’s relatively inexperienced in the sport of Biathlon, competing in just three Biathlons in the past, he has been a celebrated Nordic skier for the past 11 years, competing at both national and international levels.

“The impact of Ian and Ryan Durand on the youth in Benzie County has been truly transformative, and the CCSC Nordic Program is proud to support their journey as elite athletes,” says Major. “This biathlon championship is a great opportunity for Ian and Ryan to showcase their skills and represent Northern Michigan at the national level.”
